An Ancient Modern Practice

Cupping provides healing in a variety of ways such as relaxing muscle tension, relieving stress, improving mobility and stimulating circulation. Cupping can be found back as far as 1550 B.C. in Egyptian culture and is one of the oldest forms of holistic healing to date. Previously, healers once used antlers, bamboo, and ceramic for their cups, but modern-day society has shifted to using glass as their choice of material. Easier maintenance, longer lasting, and more sanitary, glass cups are the more popular choice for healers and many can be fashioned to allow the use of a pump attachment to alleviate the dangers of using fire to create the vacuum effect.

Particular Placements

In photos and videos, the practitioner may seem to be simply placing the cups all over the body, or only in the affected area, but that is not the case. In order to achieve the benefits of cupping, the practitioner must be knowledgeable about the body’s meridian, or qi points. Similar to the points used in acupuncture, the practitioner will place cups along the body’s particular meridian points to create a flow and circulation of interaction between the body and the cups. The cups are placed strategically to stimulate energy flow to reduce tension and blockage found in the body.

Spots and Pigmentation

Dark colored circles, or light pink marks, the markings of cupping are quite recognizable and sometimes mistaken for other types of actions. But these markings of cups are not painful and are completely harmless and temporary. The coloration of these spots is a great indicator for you and your practitioner to identify problem areas or the toxicity of your body. The different shades of color, the appearance of leakage or blisters, bubbles, black patches, purpura (purple spots on the skin), minute blisters, tiny spots, and other bodily disfigurements may indicate higher levels of toxicity and concerns for your body. Luckily, most of these markings fade in less than a week with proper aftercare, but some may last longer and required more specialized post-treatment depending on the severity. It is best to contact your practitioner on the regular after your cupping treatment to make sure you are following the after care instructions correctly.

Fire is used to increase the effectiveness of the dry cupping.

Treatment Action

Most are able to notice the benefits of cupping after their first treatment. Reduced pain, a sense of release, or reduced tension. The treatment helps relax the body and stimulate circulation which helps reduce pain and improve bodily functions. Multiple treatments can help with tightening the skin, reducing sagging, and improving sleep. A good detox of any kind can also help with digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and reproductive problems!
